HODs success!
30 November 2012
Heritage Open Days, the four-day festival of local heritage that takes place every September, smashed more records than the Olympics in 2012, with more visitors, more volunteers, more events and more awareness than in any of its previous 18 years.
In spite of the proliferation of national events that took place throughout the summer, Heritage Open Days saw a record 2 million visitors across the four-day weekend, with over 4,600 events taking place. Some 66 theatres opened their doors, along with 78 libraries, 57 cemeteries, 23 factories, 16 windmills, 12 historic vessels and 6 tunnels.
“It’s the feel-good event of the year” says Loyd Grossman, Patron of Heritage Open Days. “By turning out in such great numbers it proves that history matters to all of us, and all those involved should celebrate this year’s wonderful success.”
Heritage Open Days is supported ( 2012-14) by English Heritage and managed by a national Partnership comprising the National Trust, The Heritage Alliance and Civic Voice. For more information, click here.

Heritage Open Days 6-9 September have launched a new website last week with the first set of listings. The new site is designed to be more streamlined than before.
FINDING YOUR EVENT: www.heritageopendays.org.uk/directory/
Over 2000 events are currently listed, which include all those regsitered by 1 May deadline as promised. If your event is not there but you have either received a pink postcard to acknowledge receipt, or can see in the organiser area that it says 'submitted', then please don't worry, it's in the queue awaiting processing.
MAPPING YOUR EVENT: www.heritageopendays.org.uk/portal
The new site has a map serch, but this needs coordinates in order to plot events. Once you have submitted an event you can always go bakck to plot it. log in to the organiser area and navigate to 'Manage your events'. Find your event in the table and click on the 'add/edit map location'.
PICTURES TELL 1000 WORDS! As you will notice when looking through the listings some events have images attached, these always help to catch the eye of visitors, and are really important in publicising events, so if you haven't uploaded an image yet, please do! By adding your image you also increase your chances of being made Pick of the Day and being highlighted on the homepage and through our twitter stream!
REGISTRATION DEADLINE: if you haven't done so already, or have more events to add, please don't miss out! Not long to go now, but there is still time to register, the closing date is 5pm on August 1st.
