Windermere Steamboat Museum

22 October 2012

The Lakeland Arts Trust has won a Regional Growth Fund of £1.25 milllion for the Windermere Steamboat Museum.

The Trust is responsible for ten historic vessels across the Registers and is currently developing plans for a new Museum.

Westmoreland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron described the award as 'stunning' and said: "The boat museum, which is due to reopen in 2015, will house some of the oldest steam yachts in the world."

The Trust say that it will benefit the local economy as part of the Windermere Waterfront Programme, creating employment, extending visitor stays and bringing £7.5 million of Heritage Lottery Funding and £1 million of private investment to the area.

The development of the Windermere Steamboat Museum is expected to attract over 100,000 visitors each year and help to further enhance the profile of the Lake District as one of the UK's leading visitor destinations.
