National Historic Ships is keen to see representatives from the National Register of Historic Vessels included in the Cultural Olympiad programme.  The details given below offer the opportunity to form part of the Discovering Places Weekend being held between 1-3 May 2010.   Discovering Places is a four year cultural festival in the run-up to the 2012 Games and is one of the major projects for the Cultural Olympiad.  If you have an event or an activity which could form part of the Discovering Places campaign, please let National Historic Ships know so that we can make sure you get the opportunity to participate or contact Heritage Link directly.

Discovering Places Weekend 1 - 3 May 2010

Discovering Places is part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. London 2012 seeks to take the Games beyond London and to inspire everyone to have their own experience. London 2012's message is about going beyond our "personal best". Discovering Places is a 3-year campaign leading up to the Games in 2012, led by Heritage Link, in partnership with organisations working in the historic, built and natural environments.

Discovering Places is a UK-wide programme, which will give people the opportunity to discover, explore, be inspired by and benefit from our nation's hidden gems - historic and contemporary buildings, public spaces and natural places in and around the cities, towns and villages where they live and work will be opened up and brought alive. For Discovering Places this is about breaking new ground, exciting new audiences, and finding new ways to work together.

Heritage Link is launching the project by holding the "Discovering Places Weekend 2010 - 1-3 May". This is intended to demonstrate the shape of things to come from the campaign. They are looking for activities that target new audiences, perhaps with new collaborations between local partners, with a view to shining a spotlight on the fantastic array of things just around the corner from people's homes and communities.

Heritage Link is looking for is activities across the UK that will drive the Discovering Places campaign forwards, inspiring all sorts of people to explore new places and try new things in their local environment. You already run activities valued by your regular audiences, so what could you do that would push your own personal best?

London 2012 will run a national launch for the Discovering Places Weekend 2010; flagship projects will be particularly highlighted but all participants in the weekend will have recognition (e.g. events listing on London 2012 website) and promotion through London 2012 newsletter database.  After the event, there will be opportunities to showcase your activity and share people's stories of their experience on London 2012 new media channels.

What are the criteria for taking part?

Your event must be free at point of access, meet the aspirations of Discovering Places to engage new audiences, particularly, but not exclusively, young people.  It should be designed particularly to surprise local people and should strive towards full accessibility.

What do you do next?

Email Heritage Link and tell them what your idea is, when it would take place, who you want to attend.  They want to hear from you before 29 January 2010, so they can begin to programme the May 2010 weekend.

Please email c.bull@heritagelink.org.uk. If this timescale doesn't work for you, there will be other opportunities to get involved with Discovering Places so please keep in touch or email National Historic Ships with your ideas.
