11 February 2010

Wednesday 17 March 2010

10.30 - 3.45

The Walker Suite

The National Railway Museum

York

The sight and sound of a working vehicle or locomotive is a delight to the public and enthusiast alike and is more interesting than a machine sitting as a static object in a museum or heritage attraction. The operation of working vehicles does bring a whole new set of problems and issues and this seminar aims to provide a forum to debate the question of whether "to work or not to work"?

The seminar will feature a range of speakers from across the spectrum and will offer practical and theoretical insights into the thorny issue of operating heritage transport.

There will also be the opportunity for delegates to debate the issue in an open discussion at the end of the meeting.

This seminar has been jointly organised

by ABTEM & SNNIT

The speakers:

Chris Knapp has worked for the Imperial War Museum for 20 years and trained in industrial conservation with the Science Museum. He has an MSc in Museum Studies and is an accredited member of ICON.

Marta Leskard is the Conservation Manager for the Science Museum and is based at its Wroughton site near Swindon.

Mike Stripe is the Secretary of the Vintage Sports Car Club, based at Chipping Norton in Oxfordshire.

Richard Gibbon is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer with 26 years experience curating and operating collection items.  He was Head of Engineering Collections at the NRM from 1989 to 2006.
