press Invitation

17 May 2010

On Friday 28th May the 112yr old wherry Albion will be sailing from her Ludham base to the riverside village of Horning for lunch provided by The Galley deli. On board will be a multi award winning brewery, the Green Jack Brewery of Lowestoft who have just brewed a special ‘Albion Mild' in support of wherry Albion, and they will be bringing a selection of their ales for sampling.  We are delighted to be supported by Green Jack as we make such a natural fit,  Albion having originally being built at Lowestoft for a maltster.

Albion has had a busy winter having her tabernacle knees replaced. Over the last three years the Norfolk Wherry Trust has invested £130,000 in bringing Albion back to as fine a condition as when she was first built in 1898.

Every year National Historic Ships, the lead organisation responsible to Government for the care and support of our historic ship heritage, hold a competition to name one ship from the register ‘Flagship of the Year'.  This year, for the first time, Norfolk Wherry Trust put Albion forward for consideration and, for the first time, National Historic Ships awarded a ‘runner up' certificate, which was given to Albion. The reason given for choosing the winning entry was that she had an extensive coastal sailing programme both in the UK and abroad.  Albion, of course, is confined to the inland waterways of the Broads and so we feel we have done ourselves and Albion proud and feel the need to celebrate. You are very welcome to come and help us push the boat out.
