A -  Our Historic Vessels

This category is for photographs which exemplify the role played by historic vessels. The vessel must be on one of NHS-UK’s registers. It could be sailing, motoring, be part of a museum display or at an event or festival.

B -  Skills in Action

This category is for the best image capturing the skills involved with operating or maintaining a historic vessel.

Category Prize: £300-worth of tools of your choice.

C -  Wish you were here

A new, fun category aimed at sharing those moments captured on a mobile device or small camera. It could be a selfie or an action shot but it must show a passion for the sea or maritime heritage.

Category Prize: Four tickets to step on board the historic vessel Waverley, the world’s last seagoing Paddle Steamer,  awarded by Waverley Excursions Ltd

Highly Commended Prize: Illustrated book ‘The Sea’, sponsored by Adlard Coles.


D - A True Classic

A category judged by Classic Boat magazine as the finest examples of traditional craft, photographed in a setting that highlights their unique characteristics

Category Prize: Two-year subscription to Classic Boat plus your photograph published in the magazine

E - Maritime Heritage in Motion

Another new category – a short film, from 1-5 minutes, that features a historic vessel or maritime skills and captures the spirit of tradition and/or conservation.

Overall Winner: National Historic Ships UK's Photographer 2017

One entrant will be chosen as the overall winner from categories A-E and the winning photograph will be included in NHS-UK's promotional material.

Overall Prize:  A monetary prize of £1000. To be awarded on a theme or activity involving an historic vessel on the National Register of Historic Vessels. (For example; conservation or maintenance work, maritime skills training, educational programmes or group activities held onboard an historic vessel)
