History

BLACKSMITH is a lighter of steel construction built by Cooks Shipyard in Wivenhoe in 1961.  The present owner raised the vessel from the river bed in 2010 following its sinking due to a burst water pipe.Since then it has been stripped back to bare steel and substantially restored it to make it habitable  A new wheelhouse was built between April 2011 and April 2013.  It is believed that the vessel is one of the last three of its type built at Cooks Shipyard at Wivenhoe.
