Although built in 1898 at Devonport Dockyard as a naval sailing pinnace, CARETTA is an example of a boat that served during the Boer War. She was armed with a 'Bow Chaser' gun and the gun platform survives in her galley today. CARETTA was converted to a private motor yacht in 1930. It is not clear if she returned to Royal Naval service during World War Two or was involved in the Dunkirk evacuation. Her engines, constructed in 1925, have been rebuilt over the years and maintained to a high standard. They are a near perfect example of Thornycroft 'Handy Billy' engines.
