Each year we hold a number of free open days for the public. An exciting opportunity to see behind the scenes, how we work with local communities and what improvements are taking place.
What are winter open days?
This winter we will be hosting open days across the network, where you can discover a new world of drained locks, chamber walks and even a boat lift.
Why do we have them?
We want to show everyone just how amazing our waterways are.
Whilst we carry out winter works such as gate repairs, dredging and relining, our open days offer a different perspective. They can reveal hidden treasures from years gone by, show the significant improvements that have or will transform a local hotspot, or perhaps highlight areas that are in need of a bit of extra TLC.
They are great free days out for all the family, where we celebrate as a community the history, structure, and the diverse cultures, old and new that are embedded into the hearts of these waterways. Our construction and heritage teams are on site to welcome you.
We'll be replacing a set of lock gates at this staircase lock flight on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. A walkway over the drained flight will provide a unique view down the staircase. Visitors will be able to see both the new and old hand-crafted lock gates, while a stonemason will be showcasing this heritage skill. Canal mysteries are revealed and locks, unlocked.
