WHITSTABLE MARITIME FAMILY WEEKEND 2022 PROGRAMME

Two fantastic family days out, organised by Whitstable Maritime. FREE admission.

Take a picnic on to Tankerton Slopes on the Saturday and Sunday from where you can watch Tankerton Bay Sailing Club and Whitstable Yacht Club recreate the historic Town Sailing Regatta.

Free copies of the popular 5K Whitstable Maritime Coastal Trail Guide will be available in local eateries.

On the East Quay of the Harbour meet the local Shipwright and Volunteers who are restoring the town’s iconic 1906 Oyster Yawl Gamecock and see two visiting Yawls on the water. Only 5 of these craft survive from a fleet of over 70.

Visit a 130 year-old Thames Barge, a survivor of the Dunkirk evacuation, on the South Quay.

On the West Quay, teams from the RNLI and HM Coastguard will be demonstrating their equipment, including the town’s lifeboat.

On Sunday only, there's an opportunity for members of the family - young and old - to visit The Horsebridge Arts Centre and choose one or more marine ecology workshops led by specialists. Whether through fieldwork, dissection, art or poetry this an opportunity to discover the living world along our coast.

While at The Horsebridge Centre, meet the shipwrights and families who built hundreds of wooden craft of all types along Island Wall before the nineteen-sixties. Share your family’s memories, photographs and other memorabilia of their boatyards with our research workers and help recreate this lost industry.

Finish the weekend swapping yarns, listening to Sea Shanties and enjoying light refreshments at the Seafarer's Supper, 6.00-9.00pm, at The Workers League, Whitstable.
