PRESS RELEASE from The Britannia Sailing Trust

Tracy Edwards, MBE, becomes patron of The Britannia Sailing Trust

Winkleigh, Devon: Britannia Sailing Trust today announced that Tracy Edwards, MBE, who skippered the first all-female crew in the 1989/90 ‘Whitbread Round the World Race’, has agreed to be their Patron.

Tracy is without doubt one of the world’s greatest sailors, and with her latest project, themaidenfactor.org  an all-female crew, sailing the world on the original, restored boat, Maiden, are to highlight and create awareness of the 130 million girls worldwide who currently are not afforded an education, and engaging with organisations facilitating that basic human right.

“I have been following the progress of this inspirational and important project to restore Britannia to her former glory and to teach traditional skills for many years.  The focus on our oceans and how we interact with them is crucial at this time and the synergy between our traditional craft and skills is essential in this regard.  I am so honoured to be invited to be a Patron of the Britannia Sailing Trust and through them be a part of our rich maritime heritage.”  Says: Tracy Edwards, MBE.

“To have Tracy Edwards on board, is a major move for The Britannia Sailing Trust. Our mission is to restore ‘Britannia’, teaching the skills and knowledge needed to keep a 105-year-old sailing vessel afloat, and working to raise awareness of our fragile oceans, and to highlight the incredible work, carried out by so many people and charities”.  Says: Thomas Morley, skipper in training and Trustee of the Britannia Sailing Trust.

“It’s so exciting for us to have Tracy Edwards as our Patron.  She is a real inspiration for everyone involved with Britannia and her future.  We really look forward to working with Tracy and hope that our beautiful old boat can be involved with her future goals too."  Says: Vicki Samuels, Chair of the Britannia Sailing Trust.
