The Reimagine, Remake, Replay project by Northern Ireland Museums is one of 17 Lottery-funded projects from around the country shortlisted for the National Lottery's Project of the Year - and you can vote for your favourite!
Reimagine, Remake, Replay is a youth project which seeks to engage young people with museums in new and meaningful ways using creative media and the latest digital technologies.
Young people aged 16-25 make up just 11 per cent of museum visitors in Northern Ireland. Reimagine, Remake, Replay (RRR) invites young people to transform their place in museums, using innovative digital technology and creative methods to respond to collections. By showcasing participants’ responses alongside collections, RRR ensures young people’s voices have a platform within museums and their ideas are supported, realised and valued.
Seven museums, including our Shipshape Network Northern Ireland project Ulster Transport Museum, opened their collections to young people, so RRR reaches young people in all corners of Northern Ireland. RRR is a four-year project and young people take the lead in shaping its development – from taking over museum spaces to programming around social issues they are passionate about. RRR’s participants make museums more relevant, accessible, enjoyable and enriching.
RRR provides a range of exciting digital technology, including 3D printers, laser cutters, virtual reality and more, with the educational expertise to creatively train participants in digital skills. Participants have created late-night events with record-breaking figures, pioneered youth-led initiatives, championed for mental health support in museums, invented escape rooms, curated a Dutch masterpiece – and more!
Throughout the pandemic, RRR completely adapted, moving all activity online whilst museums closed doors. The project continued to provide its meaningful benefits for participants – education, experience, skills, a social outlet and creative community, a sense of achievement, improved confidence and mental health - at a time when they needed these most. The project ran several hugely successful online events, including a mental health festival, creative writing, mobile photography and illustration programmes.

This October, RRR's latest programme is Paints, Trains & Automobiles, a free, 3-week course for 16-25 year olds at Ulster Transport Museum and online, where participants can take part in creating a Graffiti Mural inspired by the museum's collections. Find out more on the website.
