About the Sailing Club

Dauntsey's School Sailing Club sails and maintains Jolie Brise under the command of full-time skipper, Toby Marris, and first mate, Adam Seager. The club is based on the River Hamble, Southampton and offers sailing opportunities to pupils of Dauntsey’s School from year 7 upwards, as well as working with other schools, particularly Mercer’s Academies.

The vessel

Jolie Brise, arguably one of the most famous tall ships in the world, has been sailed and maintained by pupils from Dauntsey's School for 40 years. She is a gaff-rigged pilot cutter built and launched in 1913. She is a well known racing vessel having competed in the first ever Fastnet Race, and has gone on to win the Race on three occasions. She has also been awarded the Blue Water Medal twice, and has been overall winner of Tall Ships Races three times. In 1977 she was acquired by the International Sailing Craft Association in association with Dauntsey's School and the Science Museum and, in 2003, Dauntsey's School bought the vessel outright.

Sailing programme

During the spring, summer and half-term holidays Jolie Brise cruises to almost anywhere in Europe; Spain, Portugal, Iceland, Norway and the Shetland Islands to name but a few. She often takes part in the Tall Ships races, and she annually competes in the Round the Island Race as well. During the winter months there are working parties both at School and on the boat in Hamble to help maintain her in good condition.

SHTP 2 training placement

Trainees get involved with all the operational tasks associated with sailing Jolie Brise including sail training activities and on-going maintenance and repairs.  Trainees are based on shore, with day trips and short cruises on the vessel. However, during July-August, longer distance sailing on Jolie Brise usually takes place, at which point trainees stay on board for set periods of time.
