Stirling & Son are traditional boatbuilders based in Plymouth who offer all aspects of design, construction, repair and restoration of wooden vessels.

In July 2013, they were awarded £150,000 funding (via the Plymouth University and Western Morning News Growth Fund) to reinstate the infrastructure on their No.1 Covered Slipway in South Yard, Devonport, Plymouth.

Built in 1763, the slip was 250 years old in 2013.  Its roof was added in 1814. The slipway is 173' long and can accommodate vessels of up to 14' draught. The undercover air draft is 75'.

The funding has covered laying new rails on the slip, building two adjustable cradles, the installation of a winch and work on the roof in order to make the workshop watertight.

Slipping Facilities

The large winch is capable of recovering fully rigged boats of up to 200 tons on two slipways undercover.  The slipping rate is £6.25 (excl. VAT) per foot of lengh, which includes hauling out and returning to the water. There is no slipway storage charge whilst work is being done.

The yard rate is £29 (excl. VAT) per hour for shipwright work and rigging and £35 (excl. VAT) per hour for electricians work and engineering.
