FOAM was built by J Slade & Sons of Polruan as a ketch rigged fruit schooner in 1888. In 1920 Lloyds Register indicates that FOAM had been converted to 'a motor,' although no further details are available. Her last known owner in 1940 was a Major A Morton. FOAM was listed as Vessel Registered in Fowey where she was moored up to 1940. The vessel was registered under the name of Mrs J (Janet) E Petch of Bournemouth in the 1952 Register of Yachts, and her location is listed as 'port belonging to Poole.'
