National Museums Northern Ireland is an ambitious organisation delivering award-winning museum services to more than 800,000 visitors annually. Our mission is to:
National Museums Northern Ireland was established by the Museums & Galleries (NI) Order 1998, and comprises the Ulster Museum, Ulster Folk Museum, Ulster Transport Museum and Ulster American Folk Park. The organisation receives its core funding from the Department for Communities (DfC), but generates income and sponsorship from a variety of other sources to meet its revenue and capital expenditure needs.
‘Global Voices, Local Choices’ is a new partnership project between National Museums NI, the African Caribbean Support Organisation NI (ACSONI) and the Northern Ireland Museums Council (NIMC). Funded by the Esmee Fairbairn Collections Fund, it aims to bring diverse cultures and perspectives into NI local and national museums. The partners will be working to engage marginalised communities, availing them a fair opportunity for their community representatives to assert their right to make choices relating to National Museums NI’s World Cultures collections and how they are interpreted. The project will raise awareness and understanding of these collections, and how a decolonisation approach can be implemented in a fresh and inclusive way through creativity. The project will be a learning experience for all partners and participants.
