Brunel’s SS Great Britain Trust, an award-winning museum and historic ship in Bristol, is offering multiple volunteering roles across the organisation's public engagement, education and operation teams.

SS Great Britain Trust began as a project in 1970 to bring the rusting shell of the SS Great Britain home from the Falkland Islands to save it from ruin and keep its story alive. Today Brunel’s SS Great Britain is now Bristol’s number one visitor attraction with two museums and the lovingly restored Victorian ship. It tells the incredible story of one of Britain’s greatest engineers and one of the most important ships in maritime history.

They are looking for enthusiastic individuals to fulfill multiple roles:

Visitor Experience Volunteers
Visitor Experience volunteers engage visitors across the site; sharing stories of the ship and the passengers and crew who travelled on board the ship, leading object-handling sessions, encouraging visitors to dress up and more.

Costumed Interpretation Volunteers
As a Costumed Interpretation Volunteer you will wear period costume and interact with visitors as yourself, describing what life would have been like for the passengers travelling aboard.

Education Assistant Volunteers
Education Assistant Volunteers will be supporting the delivery of school workshops with the workshop leader, to provide exciting, hands-on and unforgettable workshops for school children.

Library Volunteers
Library Volunteers would be the public face of the library and could be showing some visitors a diary, letter or artefact from the National Brunel Collection, answering questions about an object out on display.

Museum Collections Volunteers
By joining the curatorial team you will assist with the cataloguing of the collection of the SS Great Britain Trust, and gain behind the scenes access to the collections.

Community and Family Engagement Volunteers
Community and Family Engagement Volunteers contribute to the Trust’s community programme, by supporting outreach activities at community events across Bristol and to support family engagement activities on site.
