The Recovery & Reinstatement Project, following last year’s devastating fire at Underfall Yard in Bristol, is underway.  Work to reinstate the yard is split into two phases:

  • Phase 1 focuses on site cleanup, roof repairs to the Shipwrights building and developing detailed design plans for full reinstatement.
  • Phase 2 involves rebuilding damaged and destroyed structures.  This is, of course, subject to planning approval and funding.  Underfall Yard are actively working with all partners to get ready for this important phase.

Progress so far:

Contracts are now in place with Alec French (architects) and MDA (project managers) to work on detailed designs and cost estimates.  Both partners are familiar with the Trust’s work having successfully supported their last renovation.  Specialist engineers Hydrock are also providing critical structural assessments and repair plans.

An essential part of Phase 1 of the Recovery and Reinstatement project has been completed. Wring Group Ltd have cleared the debris from the damaged buildings and, via Brinfield Services, undertook reinforcement works to the wall of the Big Shed.  The Trust was really impressed with the sensitive approach of Wring Group Ltd and the way they assisted the Trust in the recovery of historic building material and yard business possessions.

Retaining our history:

The Trust is saving historic material from the debris.  Bricks with makers’ marks have been found, offering insight into the original construction of the sheds.  Bricks from Malago Colliery and Brickworks and Cattybrook Brick Limited have both been found as well as a ridge tile stamped Portishead.  The Trust remains committed to researching and sharing the stories of our site and community and will be adding more of these stories to their website throughout 2024 and beyond.

Next Steps:

The Trust is now working towards safely opening the walkway through the yard.  They do not yet have a date for the reopening but will share this on the website as soon as possible.

The Trust will soon begin repairs to the Shipwright’s roof.  Once completed, this will allow a return for one of the amazing maritime businesses.

Supporting the Trust:

Underfall Yard connects with people’s lives in different ways: as part of Bristol’s heritage; a neighbour; a place to work, learn and visit.  They are doing everything they can to ensure that the yard is restored for the full benefit of the community, and look forward to the day operations resume at Underfall Yard.
