To coincide with the 200th anniversary of the RNLI this year, National Historic Ships UK has designated May 2024 as Lifeboats Month.

We’ll be launching our own Lifeboats Report, which summarises an in-depth review of the 150+ historic lifeboats on the National Registers, and highlighting a different historic lifeboat each day on social media, from some of the earliest pre-RNLI pulling and sailing lifeboats to those with the highest number of medals and lives saved, as well as class prototypes.  We'll also highlight some current lifeboat conservation projects and some which are part of our UK-wide Shipshape Network of maritime heritage projects.

Follow @nathistships on FacebookTwitter/X, and Instagram to join in.

RNLI 200 Word Search

As a bit of fun, we've also put together a lifeboats-themed word search, which can be downloaded below.  School groups, museums, educational workshops, and other groups are welcome to download and print off multiple copies for their visitors.  The word search is suitable for both adults and children, and if you send us your completed word search by the end of May, you'll be entered into our Prize Draw.

Prizes include: 4 x signed copies of the newly-published book One Crew: The RNLI's Official 200 Year History, by the maritime historian and author Dr. Helen Doe.  There will also be some special lifeboat-themed prizes for children aged up to 18.  Please tell us your full name (and age if under 18) when submitting your word search.

Send your completed word search by email to info@nationalhistoricships.org.uk by 31 May 2024. This can be in the form of either a scan or a photograph.
