Interests & Background
Janice comes from near Belfast, Northern Ireland and had her first sailing experience on TS Royalist at the age of 15. She has a true passion for Sail Training, working with young people and historic vessels and is always smiling! Janice has sailed with the sea cadets in the UK and joined Tall Ship Atyla as watchleader for the summer of 2018 and was awarded Sail Training International prize for best volunteer Sail Trainer of the year 2018.
What attracted you to the project?
I applied for the SHTP2 traineeship because, it sounded like my dream opportunity! To learn more about these amazing ships that I want to sail on, to have the ability to fix stuff onboard and the opportunity to spend a full season onboard Excelsior is genuinely a dream come true for me!!!
By the end of the season I’m hoping I’ll be a big step closer to being able to work as a crew member onboard sail training vessels.

Life at Excelsior Trust
The Excelsior Trust is a charitable organisation that provides life changing sailing experiences for young and disadvantaged people, schools and corporate groups, as well as unique sailing opportunities for individuals, whilst maintaining historic vessel Excelsior LT472. SHTP2 Trainees will develop the necessary skills to make a career working with traditional sailing vessels as a ship’s bosun, a professional rigger, or a crew member.

APRIL blog update - After the sailing we’ve done this month I can’t wait for the season to get slightly busier, and do some longer trips and more sail training voyages. I’m also beginning to feel a lot more competent during maintenance days, which is really lovely, and I’m so glad that I’m finding my feet more and more
UPDATE March 2019 - it’s totally re-ignited my excitement to get the season started and share my love for what I do with all the trainees and guests onboard Excelsior this season!!
UPDATE February 2019 - The next morning was our long awaited masterclass in different types of rigs and traditional navigation with TOM CUNLIFFE. I can honestly say he is one of the most inspirational people I have ever met!!!!
UPDATE January 2019 - To finish off January, we got to do the part of college I have been most looking forward to … wire splicing! This is a skill I’ve wanted to learn for ages, and I’m so glad I finally got the chance......
