Keeping History Afloat was a two-year training programme in traditional boatbuilding and conservation skills grant aided by the Heritage Fund between 2010-14 and located in the Heritage Boatyard at the National Waterways Museum in Ellesmere Port. The aim of the project was to provide training and relevant work experience with the aim of developing a new generation of people with the skills and knowledge needed to restore and conserve historic vessels.
This project saw six work-based 18-month training placements delivered by the Canal & Rivers Trust (then Waterways Trust) in partnership with NHS-UK and the development of competency units in historic vessel conservation, which were developed into a new BTEC Level 3 Diploma qualification in Historic Vessel Conservation.
