History

SOUTHSEA, a passenger ferry, was built by William Denny Bros Ltd, Dumbarton, for Southern Railway and launched on 11 March 1948. She entered service on 1 November 1948 on the run from Portsmouth Harbour to Ryde Pier and was in continuous service until 1986. She was purchased from Sea Containers in January 1997 and placed with the Receiver in February 1998. She was sold on to another owner in July 1998. SOUTHSEA is believed to be the last of the traditional passenger ferries built for the railways by Denny of Dumbarton and engined by Sulzer. She is also considered to be the first en route to have a radar.
