History

Built in 1936 by W J Yarwood & Sons, Northwich for the Grand Union Canal Carrying Company, NUTFIELD is a narrow boat of steel construction with a Lister Petter HB2 diesel engine. She worked the Grand Union Canal pulling her butty boat NESTON until 1948 when she passed to the ownership of British Waterways. She was leased to Willow Wren Ltd and then to Blue Line Carriers where she worked with the butty RAYMOND carrying the last loads of coal from the North Warwickshire coal fields to the Kearley and Tonge's jam factory in Southall under the captaincy of the Bray family. With the closure of the factory in 1970, canal carrying ceased. Passing into private ownership, she was eventually bought by her present owners in 2003. They maintain and operate her as a charitable trust. She is in good working condition and attends shows in the Midlands.
