History

ALICE was built at Wivenhoe in 1954 by Cooks for Hubbock's, the paint manufacturer in Wapping, London. She was originally built as a lighter, to be rowed or towed, to and from the River Lea to the Lower Pool of London. She carried various cargos, including supplying the pirate radio ships with stores in the 60's and 70's.

ALICE was purchased by O Emerson in 1994 and reconstructed as a two-masted Thames Sailing Barge at Upnor near Chatham in Kent. This work was completed in 1998. In 2005, she was relocated to Gun Wharf Quay in Portsmouth where she was used for charters in the Solent. In 2022 ALICE was bought by her current owners as a home, but can also be used for charters. She has returned to Kent and during the summer months is regularly seen sailing in the Swale, the Medway, Thames and the East Coast. ALICE is moored in Conyer near Faversham, and is currently fitted with a 2010 Ford diesel engine.
