History

BENEVOLENCE was built 1938 by Nurser Bros of Braunston for John Green of Macclesfield. She was mostly used for carrying coal to Macclesfield. John Green was the last regular carrier on the Macclesfield Canal. In 1953 she was sold to the Wyvern Shipping co of Leighton Buzzard. The history is then obscure until 1986. By then the boat had been fitted with a full length residential conversion. Extensive re-planking was carried out by Martin Cox at Saul dry dock on the Gloucester and Sharpness canal. She was awarded the 1986 Keay Award. The boat then returned to a mooring on the Oxford Canal. Over the next 38 years she changed hands several times but little maintenance was done and she stayed on the Oxford Canal.

In 2024 she was purchased by her current owner and moved to Greater Manchester.  Maintenance has been begun and adapting her for use in his tree surgery business.
