Course: Renovation and Finishing

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

Instructed by master boat builder Colin Henwood, learn the techniques for producing a high-grade paint and varnish finish; removing old coatings, preparing surfaces and applying a new finish.

The course will cover the following:

  • Preparing timber for finishing.
  • Removing old finishes efficiently.
  • Setting up a finishing “space” and dust control.
  • Various techniques for applying paint and varnish.
  • Preparing surfaces ready for coating.
  • Applying paint and varnish to a large range of items.
  • Selecting the correct paint and varnish schedules.

As well as the list above, the course will cover advice and guidance on specific projects the students may have. Also, restoration techniques such as fitting a graving piece and dealing with damaged timber. The course concentrates on using conventional paint and varnish materials to achieve high quality results, however, we will discuss other finishing materials and techniques.

The course starts at 0900 on the first day.

After the first day all courses run to the normal workshop times of: 0830 to 1730

  • Tea breaks at 1030 and 1530
  • Lunch 1300 to 1400
  • 1530 on the last day
