Course: Traditional Wooden Boat Building

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

Gain practical experience in the construction of traditional clinker and carvel craft. This will include:

  • Selecting the right tool for the job and learning and practicing tool sharpening.
  • Lining-off for planking.
  • Basic boat building joints.
  • Spiling to determine plank shapes.
  • Shaping and fitting planks.
  • Different types of plank scarfs – demonstration & practical.
  • Steaming and copper riveting, other fastenings, and adhesives.
  • Knees, floors & bulkheads.
  • Caulking, Painting & finishing.

You will also cover some relevant theory, including:

  • Looking at different hull construction types.
  • Sources of information – plans, lines drawings and lofting, determining stem and apron bevels from the lofting.
  • Different methods of setting up centreline structures and building jigs.

The first day the course starts at 0900.

After the first day all courses run to the normal workshop times of: 0830 to 1730

  • Tea breaks at 1030 and 1530
  • Lunch 1300 to 1400
  • 1530 on the last day
