As part of Heritage Open Days 2022 we’re pleased to offer free behind the scenes tours of our brand new conservation laboratory and our archive.
Clever Conservation:
Join our Conservator in our brand-new conservation laboratory to see how our collection is cared for and discover how she applies chemistry and material science to understand the treatment needs of different materials. In line with this year’s theme, you will get an insight into conservation treatment processes, including selecting and carrying out the right treatment methods for a variety of materials.
Amazing Archives:
Discover the people and landscapes captured by early photography in our brand-new purpose-built archive. Marvel at the amazing architecture of the Dockyard documented in our plans and drawings collection. Fast forward to the future with our scanning equipment and witness the wonder of digitisation and its role in the preservation of our collections for future generations.

Access
A member of the collections team will meet you at our main visitor entrance and walk you to the Conservation Lab (approximately quarter of a mile, varying surfaces) for the first part of the tour, which takes place on the ground floor of our Fitted Rigging House building. The second half of the tour will be on the top floor of the same building, which is fully accessible by stairs or lift.
