National Historic Ships UK is committed to developing Statements of Significance over time for all craft on the National Register of Historic Vessels (NRHV).  These are being written as part of the ongoing National Historic Fleet review and on a case-by-case basis in relation to vessel applications made to the National Lottery Heritage Fund, or other funding bodies on which we are consulted.

To do this, we need the help of registered historic vessel owners to provide key information about their vessel and to produce a first draft statement.

Statements of Significance are prepared using the three headings set out in our guidance publication 'Conserving Historic Vessels'

1. What is the vessel's ability to demonstrate history in her physical fabric?
2. What are the vessel's associational links for which there is no physical evidence?
3. How does the vessel's shape or form combine and contribute to her function?

We encourage owners to send us updates on current Statements of Significance, or to draft their own statements for vessels which do not currently have a Statement in place.  To assist with this process, we have developed a downloadable template with some supporting guidance on the type of information we are looking for when developing a Statement of Significance.

To find out more about Statements of Significance, please read our online flyer.

Owners who have completed a draft Statement and wish to have it reviewed for publication on their vessel's online entry should email us: info@nationalhistoricships.org.uk
