History
SELINA KING is a Bermudan Cutter designed by Frederick Shepherd and built by Harry King & Sons of Pin Mill, Suffolk, for the author Arthur Ransome, of 'Swallows and Amazons' fame. At 36ft, she was the largest boat commissioned by Ransome.
The vessel sailed for 24 years in UK waters, before being sold abroad. She had various owners and adventures in the Caribbean and the Southern USA until 1962, when found abandoned and in a poor state in Florida by Hal White, who sailed her to Bermuda. She was eventually bought there by the current owner in 2011, and was shipped back to the UK in 2017. An extensive refit was carried out, culminating in her launch in 2023 at the very yard where she had been built, Harry King & Sons Boatyard.
The restoration was carried out sympathetically using as much of the original boat as possible. Original cockpit. Varnished teak coachroof which is narrow in proportions, typical of the period. Bronze portholes and a sheathed coachroof deck. New rigging and spars 2022. Keel stepped varnished spruce mast. T&G pine deck laid over oak deck beams and sheathed externally in epoxy glass cloth. The hull is carvel planked in pitch pine fastened with copper rivets to steam bent oak timbers. 2”x2” oak timbers interspersed with slightly smaller timbers. Many new frames fitted using laminated oak. Cast iron ballast keel of 3.56 tons fastened with stainless steel keel bolts, all new in 2024.
