History

NORWAY is a replica of a narrowboat of the same name. The original NORWAY was built in 1927 by the Anderton Company in Middleport, Stoke on Trent, most likely the first motor narrowboat they ever built. In 1951, she was purchased by M Mathews of Stone, Staffordshire, who had her converted to a houseboat by the Wyatts at Yard lock in the town. In 1977, she was broken up after sinking, but her ironwork was saved.

The replica's current owner purchased the original vessel's knees in 2017, and began building an accurate steel replica of her, in full planked steel, replicating her build based on the original ironwork and measurements obtained from the Anderton Notebook in the Canal and River Trust Archives. Her baseplate was laid at Langley Mill Boatyard in 2023, and NORWAY was launched in October 2025. All original features of the original boat were preserved included a drop counter deck, Anderton style T stud, wooden stem post, welded scarfe joints and visible plank lines.
