We are charity Rescue Wooden Boats, owners and restorers of Dunkirk Little Ship and Liverpool Lifeboat Lucy Lavers, who now lives a new life afloat giving historic trips in Wells-next-the-Sea Harbour.
Our aim as a charity is to conserve and tell the stories of the local wooden fishing boats and lifeboats together with the stories of those who used and built them, and the skills and communities involved.
We do this through:
- our Maritime Heritage Centre in Stiffkey where we have a small Museum and Event Room set in the old WW2 Artillery Training Camp. This is next door to a working boatyard which builds and restores these historic craft and to which museum visitors may be taken across.
- our annual Maritime Heritage Festival in Wells where we get as many as possible of the old local wooden fishing boats together for display and a spectacular flotilla along with maritime themed entertainment, demonstrations, food, drink and merchandise for all ages.
- trips on Lucy Lavers, and
- our website where we have hundreds of oral history, boatbuilding and boat restoring films and also local fishing and boatbuilding families’ photographs.
We would particularly welcome more volunteers to join our friendly team in Stiffkey at the Maritime Heritage Centre (currently Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays and occasional weekdays) and also for assisting with the very busy Maritime Heritage Festival (August 3 & 4 this year). There are openings for other skills and interests.
