About us

The Tall Ship Glenlee is an independent museum owned by the Tall Ship Glenlee Trust (formerly known as the Clyde Maritime Trust), dedicated to sharing the rich history of this unique Clyde-built 19th-century sailing vessel. Our mission is to benefit, entertain, and educate all who visit.

Hundreds of ships were built in Glasgow’s successful shipyards, but the Glenlee remains one of only five ships of her type still afloat in the world—and the only one in the UK.

As one of Glasgow’s most distinctive attractions, The Tall Ship Glenlee offers visitors the chance to explore the fascinating history of this incredible vessel.

People on Glenlee

Launched in 1896, Glenlee endured the notorious seas of Cape Horn 15 times during a distinguished career at sea. Over the years, she served as both a sail training vessel and bulk cargo carrier, and circumnavigated the globe four times. The ship has also had many names, including Islamount, Galatea, and Clarastella—but her original name, Glenlee, endures.

After many years of adventure, Glenlee was abandoned in Seville, Spain. Discovered in 1990 by a British naval architect, she was purchased at auction in 1992 by the Clyde Maritime Trust, who completed a six-year restoration project and opened the ship to the public in 1999.

The museum is particularly popular with schools offering a range of maritime-themed learning activities and educational workshops.

The Tall Ship Glenlee is also a sought-after venue for hire, having hosted a variety of events from conferences to graduation balls and weddings.
