Ever wondered what life was like during 1944?

Gemma Robins, owner of ML1392 Sarinda has published the diary of a young Navy recruit, Frank 'Curly' Capstick, who joined the Navy at 17, and spent most of 1944 onboard the vessel. Built by Berthon Boats, Lymington, and completed on 20 December 1943, ML1392 was part of the 149th ML Flotilla, and was a navigation leader at Gold Beach during the D-Day landings in June 1944.

The book, The 1944 Diaries, has a diary post from Frank every day during 1944, as well as historical information about events and ships used during this time.

The diary provides us with a unique insight into the daily life of a young sailor during the Second World War.  His experiences and observations paint a vivid picture of what it was like to serve in the Royal Navy during this tumultuous time.

Despite his young age, Frank was eager to serve his country and was determined to make a difference.  His diary entries reveal his initial excitement at being accepted into the Navy and his pride at being able to contribute to the war effort.  As the war raged on, Frank's diary entries become more sombre and reflective.  He writes about the dangers he and his fellow sailors faced on a daily basis, as well as the loss of friends and comrades.  Throughout it all, however, Frank's spirit and determination remain unbroken.  His diary is a testament to the resilience and bravery of those who served during WW2, and serves as a reminder of the sacrifices that were made in order to secure victory.

ML1392 (now named Sarinda), the ship Frank called home, is facing her own challenges eighty years on.  Simon and Gemma Robins, the current owners, are on a mission to help preserve this historic ship and our rich maritime heritage, while documenting their journey on their YouTube channel Ship Happens.  In the book, they tell the story of how they came to own this vessel, and how their restoration journey began.

All proceeds from the sale of the book will go towards the restoration costs of Sarinda.

The book is available on Amazon on Kindle or as a hardback book.
