History

Built in 1936 By W J Yarwod, PADDINGTON was transferred in 1949 to the North Eastern division Docks and Inland Waterways Executive and subsequently shortened by them to 57 feet for use on Huddersfield Broad Canal maintenance. She retains her original (as opposed to reproduction) 1936 riveted back cabin, one of only two of the "Big Northwich" type to do so. Fitted with an air-cooled Lister engine while a maintenance boat. Sold 1988 (picture at time of sale attached) and converted for pleasure use.

When sold out of the maintenance fleet in 1988, PADDINGTON was taken to G M Engineering of Great Bridge, West Bromwich, where a full rebuild and restoration took place - rebottoming, partial refooting, repairs to original cabin, riveted where necessary, 28 ft extension cabin fitted, air-cooled Lister engine retained and reinstalled in original engine room - it had been moved into the back cabin. Since then further extensive hull works have been carried out in 2016 including new bottom, part overplated, part renewed; patches let in behind knees in 6 places; patches to engine room sides below water; engine changed from non-original type Lister CS2 (only installed in 1997) to air-cooled Lister HB2, similar type to that fitted by British Waterways when a maintenance boat relaunched in October 6th.
