History

AMITY was built as A.M.T. ON963, a 47ft Watson-Class lifeboat for the RNLI. She was built in 1962 by J Samuel White of Cowes, Isle of Wight, and is fitted with her original twin Gardner 5LW diesel engines. She was originally stationed at the Howth lifeboat station, Ireland, between 1962 and 1986, at which point she was transferred to the Relief Fleet. In 1989, she was declared non-operational, having been launched a total of 213 times and having saved 87 lives.

A.M.T. was sold out of service in 1991 to G Avery of Barnstaple, North Devon, where she became based. In 2004, she was sold to C and J Warner and moved to Watermouth Bay, North Devon. In 2015, she was sold to E and C Shawyer and moved to the Solent and Portsmouth Harbour. It was at this point that she was given her current name, AMITY

In 2024, her owners travelled to 31 Lifeboat Stations throughout the South East to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the RNLI and raise funds in their support. In 2025, AMITY was transferred to the care of the Helen Wycherley Heritage Association, who will operate her to raise awareness and funds for the ongoing restoration of HELEN WYCHERLEY
