History

MV MAID OF GLENCOUL is a car and passenger ferry built by MacCrindle Shipbuilding Ltd., Ardrossan, for Highland Council in 1975. She has a single car deck with capacity for 14 cars, with quarter-loading bow and stern ramps. She was originally built to service Kylesku, and was the first vessel there capable of carrying fully loaded commercial vehicles.

After the opening of the Kylesku Bridge, in 1984, MAID OF GLENCOUL became the Corran Ferry. At Kylesku her ramps were on opposite sides, so when she moved to Corran she was converted to have both ramps on the same side to suit operations at the Corran narrows.

When the MV CORRAN entered service in 2001, the MAID OF GLENCOUL became the backup vessel at Corran, providing cover for MV CORRAN's annual overhaul, and for any breakdowns. MAID OF GLENCOUL has had significant investment in recent years, including replacement of steelwork, a steering upgrade, engine and equipment overhauls, wiring replacement and safety system upgrades.

The MV CORRAN is now 25 years old, with plans to replace her with an electric ferry. CORRAN's refits are inevitably extended due to age-related works, so the investments made in the MAID OF GLENCOUL allow her to provide the cover required, ensuring the resilience of the Corran Ferry service in the immediate future.

Although her hours are now reduced, The MAID OF GLENCOUL has been in service for 50 years. In that time the size of cars has increased, and the service has become significantly busier. The Corran Ferry service across Loch Linnhe, between the A82 and A861, provides a lifeline connection linking the communities of Fort William, Ardgour, Sunart, Ardnamurchan, Moidart, Morar, Morvern and the Isle of Mull, providing a regular service 7 days a week. MAID OF GLENCOUL has been essential to this connection for over four decades, holding special significance in Lochaber to residents and visitors alike.
