History
CYANNE is an Ohlson 38 racing yacht, built by Robertsons of Woodbridge in 1976 on a hull moulded by Tyler Boat Company LTD of Kent in 1972. The Ohlson 38 is a classic Swedish-designed offshore cruiser-racer conceived in 1967 by naval architect Einar Ohlson. Unlike many production yachts of its era, the Ohlson 38 was planned from the outset as a GRP hull boat built to Lloyd’s scantlings, giving it a strong, relatively lightweight structure suited to both competitive racing and serious cruising. The most striking design innovations of the Ohlson 38 included a moderate fin keel with encapsulated lead ballast and a skeg-hung rudder separate from the keel. This, along with fine hull lines and well-considered overhangs, gave the Ohlson 38 performance well beyond many contemporaries and made her a favourite in mixed cruiser/racer fleets. CYANNE is one of just two yachts in the class built with a custom short coachroof, giving her an elegant, low-profile cabin trunk and a long open foredeck. In addition to this, she's equipped with a smaller cockpit, so it could drain faster in heavy weather. She is still fitted with her original Bukh DV24 diesel engine.
Throughout her service life, CYANNE saw extensive cruising around the British Isles, especially in Scotland and Ireland. She has retained many of her original features, with the GRP hull and original woodwork above and below deck remaining intact. Unlike other Ohlson 38s, she was not significantly altered, maintaining her cruiser-racer layout. Her running rigging, sails and deck gear have been periodically renewed, as expected for a yacht of her age. In 2025, she was purchased by her current owner, and is based in Lydney, Gloucestershire.
