History

BANBURY is a Large Woolwich Town class narrowboat, built by Harland & Wolff at Woolwich for the Grand Union Canal Carrying Company. She is recorded as Grand Union Canal Carrying Company fleet number 226, and Historic Narrow Boat Club material also lists her in the Grand Union fleet.

In 1995, she was bought by her present owner from the 3 Fellows Carrying Company of Nottingham, together with the motorboat BUXTON. The purchase coincided with the end of the company’s working life on the gravel run. BUXTON was later sold on.

BANBURY has since been converted to residential use and is moored on the Oxford Canal at an Agenda 21 mooring in Oxford. As of 2026 she is regularly dry docked, most recently for welding work, and the owner holds a record of her dry docking history since 1995.
