National Historic Ships UK (NHS-UK) has been awarded a grant of £18,300 from The Philip Nicholas Charitable Trust to consolidate a new framework of learning units in partnership with the Lynher River Barge CIC, one of our Shipshape Network Hubs in the South West.

This project follows the success of NHS-UK’s Lottery funded Shipshape Heritage Training Partnership programme, which delivered 26 training placements for young people, 22 of whom went on to be employed or volunteer within the sector. SHTP developed a Competency Workbook comprised of 12 units setting down skills unique to the operation and maintenance of historic craft which will form the basis of the training framework now being trialed.

This new project will support seasonal training placements on board Lynher, one of two surviving Tamar River barges, which is listed on the National Historic Fleet. Based at Cremyll, the trainee will undertake six of the new competency units, learning traditional operational skills whilst developing their understanding of how purpose and construction can impact on vessel handling. The project also allows for the development of a series of short films as additional learning resources to enable wider delivery of the course in the longer term.
