ST440 was built as a seaplane tender in 1941 by the British Powerboat Company of Hythe. She is of timber clinker construction and is powered by twin BMC diesel engines.

After service with the Royal Air Force until 1954 she passed into private ownership and has been restored over a six year period by her present owner.
