Built by the Osbornes of Littlehampton, J W ARCHER (ON 933) was the 4th of a class of 10 boats. She was stationed at Wicklow in Eire where she was named in July 1956. During her service career she saved 75 lives. She was a slip launched boat all her life and was the last non self righter lifeboat in service with the RNLI.
She was retired in 1987 and prepared for display at the Glasgow Garden Festival in 1988 by the RNLI. in 1989 she was sold by the RNLI and has resided at Porth Penrhyn ever since. She is kept in as original a condition as possible and used regularly. Her two Gardner 4LW engines are the original pair manufactured in late 1955 and are a simple but effective means of propulsion.
