History

CLEON is a 36ft motor cruiser built in mahogany by the Rampart Boatbuilding Company, a yard established shortly after the First World War that became known for its wooden motor yachts before ceasing trading in the early 1980s. She was built to the Rampart 36 design and dates from c.1964.

In the 2000s CLEON was purchased in Liverpool by an owner who had previously owned a 48ft Rampart, sold on to a new owner who went on to cruise her extensively in Portugal and other warmer climates. CLEON was kept on the South Coast of England for several years while her owner ran a chandlery and marina business, formerly the premises of Stow & Sons Boatbuilders.

CLEON was sold in 2008/9 for £46,000. Her new owners fitted new engines, propeller shafts, propellers and associated fittings before relocating the vessel to Capestang on the Canal du Midi in France.

CLEON later returned to England and spent around 18 months out of the water before being repurchased by her earlier owner for £10,000, in the knowledge that significant hull work was required. Restoration included complete sanding of the hull, recaulking where necessary, and the application of three coats of underwater primer and four coats of antifouling. She returned to the water in 2012, taking on 10 to 15 gallons of water while in the sling, though this soon stopped.

A survey in 2019 recorded the vessel in generally sound condition, with a number of maintenance recommendations typical of a wooden vessel of her age, including work to seacocks, wiring and gas fittings.

CLEON was later sold for £18,500 to a new owner who found her upkeep challenging and fell behind on mooring payments. In October 2025 she was taken into the ownership of Shoreham Port Authority, having been arrested for unpaid mooring fees.
