This large facility adjacent to Bristol Marina is available for dry docking vessels up to 90 metres in length. A 300 tonne ship lift was on site with covered working area. James Martin Hilhouse started shipbuilding on a site close to Hotwells Road in about 1770. The creation of the Floating Harbour saw the firm move their yard to the south bank where they established their New Dockyard complete with dry-dock. Steam Tug Kerne is operated by the Steam Tug Kerne Preservation Society, which is constituted as a 'Not For Profit' company limited by guarantee and registered as a charity. The objects of the charity are "To promote, for the benefit of the public, the preservation and maintenance of the historic steam tug Kerne. To advance the education of the public in the science, technology and use of steam power in general and its application to marine in particular." 1913 coal fired steam tug. Kerne was the last coal fired steamer to work commercially on the River Mersey. H.M.Tug Terrier 1913 -1948.
